> **Short answer:** Dreaming of stairs does not tie to a single meaning. In a psychological view, stairs most often stand for progress, a passage or the hesitation felt when taking a step. What decides the meaning is whether you climb or descend and what you feel on the stairs.

## The psychological view

Stairs show the passage between two levels, so in a dream they are often read with progress, rising or the hesitation felt between one step and the next. Climbing and descending add different feelings to the same image.

Dream research reports that dream content relates to the experiences of waking life (Source 2). So thinking of a stairs dream alongside a situation where the next step is before you makes the reading concrete.

## Variations

### Climbing stairs

Climbing relates to the feeling of heading for a goal or a new stage. Were the steps easy or hard?

### Going down stairs

Going down is tied to the feeling of descending into depths or stepping back. What waited for you below?

### Endless stairs

Endless stairs describe constant effort without arriving. What end are you waiting for?

### A broken step

A broken step brings up your insecurity about the step you are about to take.

## Ask yourself

- Were you going up or coming down the stairs?
- Were the steps solid?
- Which step are you about to take lately?
